state songs

this is where you tell me bands that have songs:

1) that have one of the 50 nifty united states in the title.
2) that mentions a state.
3) that have both 1 + 2.

it's okay if they're obvious. it's okay if they're corny. just post if you can think of any. if you can post what album/release it's on, that would be fantastic as well. ding and i had this idea last night, but i went to sleep with the upload LJ window up and IM on. oops. btw, I EXPECT A LOT OF COMMENTS ON THIS ONE, SO DON'T HOLD BACK!

Current Mood: bouncy
Current Music: i secretly cry myself to sleep on WMUC

I'll start with the super-obvious: John Linnell's State Songs.

Both 1 + 2, alphabetical by state name:
"Sweet Home Alabama" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
"California" - Quasi, Featuring "Birds"
"Missouri" - Low, Secret Name

Ones to check on:
"Kansas" (Wedding Present)
"Texas" (Big Black)

More if I think of them.

since i am a fanatic, some mountain goats song that fit the criteria:

going to alaska
going to georgia*
going to kansas
going to maine
going to maryland
going to michigan
going to tennessee
going to wisconsin

*this is the one i most recommend. it is on zopilote machine and is one of the most brilliant songs ever written, as far as i'm concerned.

this is a great idea... here are some of my favorites:

1. marshmallow coast - the lonliest heart in texas (marshmallow coasting)
2. phantom planet - california (the guest)
3. the new amsterdams - idaho (never you mind)
4. city on film - portland, maine and the pouring rain (this is on a seven inch i have... used to have the mp3 of it but ohhhh its so good!)
5. modest mouse - ohio (this is a long drive...)
6. the impossibles - connecticut (return)
7. kincaid - super hawaii (kincaid plays super hawaii)
8. josh rouse - dressed up like nebraska (dressed up like nebraska)
9. kincaid - alaska (kincaid plays...)

ok so there's my little contribution :)

Manic Street Preachers, "Tennessee" (Generation Terrorists)
Arrested Development, "Tennessee" (3 Years, 5 Months & 2 Days in the Life of...)
Sleater-Kinney, "Light Rail Coyote" (One Beat... it's about Portland. Crap song, though)
Call & Response, "California Floating in Space" (S/T)
Pavement, "Unfair" (Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain... about California, a really good one too. Bonus points for referring to Sacramento as Sacto)
Lucinda Williams, "Lake Charles" (Car Wheels on a Gravel Road... references to Texas & Louisiana. A lot of her songs are full of geographical references to the South, although they tend to mention towns/cities instead of states)

Long vermont Roads.

Long Vermont Roads, by the Magnetic Fields.
Mentions Vermont, (in the title, genius)
Kansas, and Missouri.

So it fits both 1 + 2.
