i could be the steve almond of organic candy?

i am not vegan (nor vegetarian), but i am a fan of sweets, and as you may know i have been weirded out by lack of thoroughness in most labels. when i placed an order for vitamins with vegan essentials, a couple of treats looked delectable. my intention was to just take a nibble of each thing and then save the rest for later. i got boston cookies - chocolate fudge brownie, the vegan baking co.'s chocolate peppermint cream, tree huggin treats - marshmallow crispy cat. the crispy cat was foul. i mean, we're talking 'not spitting out the bite i took was difficult' foul. i opened the chocolate peppermint cream and dudes, oh my god. heaven! the packaging of junior mints never used to say gelatin, but now it says gelatin. w the f. SO, finding an amazing replacement is pretty much the best thing ever. granted, one of these was $2.39 on vegan essentials, but if you buy straight from the source, the vegan baking company, they're a tad cheaper. i'm in love. i am going to wait a couple of days to eat the fudge brownie since good god, i baked like 4 dozen of those awesome christmas chippers because i am trying to rid my cabinets of all sugary stuff so i can get back on track with diet and exercise. i know, i know. how long have i been saying this? it will happen. i've just been trying to get all this other little stuff i have been putting off out of the way so i can surrender myself fully. :)

I know the owner of the vegan baking co. I worked with his mother in Knoxville, and he was doing all sorts of fairs and things with vegan treats, trying to get his business started. I was vegan when we met, so we used to talk bakery shop all the time. The best are his peanut butter cups. I made a version of them once. The secret ingredient is graham crackers. Shhh!

not so secret --> INGREDIENTS: PEANUT BUTTER (PEANUTS), GRAHAM CRACKER CRUMBS, NON-DAIRY AND CHOCOLATE CHIPS.

i definitely want to try those. let me know if you ever want to go in a case of them or the chocolate peppermint creams with me. delicious.

nah, I'm not close with him anymore. So no discounts for me.

Yeah, I read the ingredients after I wrote you. It used to be a secret. Oh well. haha! I made heart shaped ones for a boy for valentine's once.

I'd totally go halfsies on a case of the peanut butter cups with you. Yum.

leigh, when are you going to go vegan already? i was veg for 12 years and recently made the switch to vegan.. or at least started to. my diet is good, it's the rest of my living stuff that needs some work. but seriously, i am having so much fun finding new ways to cook old favorites. and i promise i don't even miss cheese anymore. vegan baking is my new favorite hobby!

honestly, i do not think i will ever be vegan, though i wil never rule it out completely. i have never had anything vegan even half tasting like real mozzarella cheese. i am very close to going back to vegetarian again (last time was nearly 10 years ago and even then only for 3 months and then scattered a couple weeks here a couple weeks there). i'm finishing out my remaining poultry products at home and work and then i should be set to at least embark towards vegetarianism again. it's a struggle for me. it always has been.

and michael s., if you are reading this too, i would really appreciate it if you would stop hounding me about going vegan in lj comments. this is my decision and my life. forcing anything down someone's throat is not going to make them want to listen to you.

i hope you didn't take my comment as hounding. i didn't realize you've felt pressured. i'm just excited about cooking and baking again so i like to share that there ARE good sibstitutes out there. though cheese is a tricky one... i've got a dairy sensitivity though so it came mostly from a desire to feel better.

i fully support each individual's right to make their own choices, including you!
