foodies meme

man, i feel downright rotten tonight. i took nyquil after getting back from the hideout last night and this morning i woke up and took sudafed cold & sinus. i'm not good for much except posting this food meme i saw on karyn's lj.

What's the last thing you ate? a chicken kabob sandwich from nikos gyros with dan for dinner.

What's your favourite cheese? boursin garlic herb tied with fresh mozarella.

What's your favourite fish? swedish fish, i don't eat fish or seafood.

What's your favourite fruit? bananas, strawberries, kiwi, watermelon?

When, if ever, did you start liking olives? more recent years, maybe in the past 5 years.

When, if ever, did you start liking beer? i have never liked straight up beer. i like hard cider and recently fell for lambic (flavored beer), but straight up beer = nope.

When, if ever, did you start liking shellfish? never.

What was the best thing your mom/dad/guardian used to make? spinach casserole.

What's the native specialty of your home town? dc doesn't have a native specialty. i guess maybe chili from ben's chili bowl is the closest thing to a specialty. that's what happens when you live in a melting pot.

What's your comfort food? spinach casserole, kraft mac & cheese, bread & butter (seriously).

What's your favourite type of chocolate? i love milk chocolate fudge, this one vegan recipe i have is absolutely insane and NO ONE could guess it is vegan. milk & white are equally goods. i quite like anything that melts in my mouth.

How do you like your steak? i have not eaten steak in 9 years now?

How do you like your burger? again, 9 years.

How do you like your eggs? i love over hard eggs & also big dippers but without the yolks. i am awesome.

How do you like your potatoes? i love shoestring french fries and also well seasoned home fries. oh wait, mashed potatoes with garlic herb butter are also delicious.

How do you take your coffee? i don't.

How do you take your tea? recently i have been a chai whore.

What's your biscuit or cookie of choice? i am a simple milk chocolate chip cookie sort of gal, though the holiday oreos are good times and also good for my vegan chums.

What's your ideal breakfast? fried egg whites, 12 grain toast with butter, and a tall glass of fresh squeezed oj.

What's your ideal sandwich? the TAMO (tm): turkey, avocado, melted muenster, and onion. sprinkle some garlic salt atop it. the best sandwich you will ever eat. omg.

What's your ideal pizza (topping and base)? pan crust, cheese, onion, black olives, garlic.

What's your ideal pie (sweet or savory)? pecan pie. i took on my mom's fave.

What's your ideal salad? spinach, romaine lettuce, heart of palms, artichokes, fresh mozarella. i also like straight up caprese salad.

What food do you always like to have in the fridge? i go through food phases. fresh mozarella, spinach, carrots.

What food do you always like to have in the freezer? i am still obsessed with those whole foods chicken & veg potstickers. i love those trader joe's spinach pies (thanks danelle). um, ice cream.

What food do you always like to have in the cupboard? barilla pasta (linguine, angel hair), pasta sauce, nuts.

What spices can you not live without? crushed red pepper flakes, rosemary, dill, garlic. i would die if i was told i was not able to eat garlic anymore.

What sauces can you not live without? tsatsiki.

Where do you buy most of your food? jewel-osco, trader joe's, whole foods.

How often do you go food shopping? once every other week maybe? sometimes more.

What's the most you've spent on a single food item? a turkey for $20, maybe?

What's the last piece of equipment you bought for your kitchen? j.a. henckels knife set.

What piece of kitchen equipment could you not live without? garlic press. i seriously thought about getting a tattoo of one. i am in love with them.

How many times a week/month do you cook from raw ingredients? like everything from scratch: that is a rarity, but i absolutely love to cook.

What's the last thing you cooked from raw ingredients? tonight i made a white cake (hope you are not reading this allison) and was going to make the frosting but i didn't have enough powdered sugar, so i had to use store bought. :/

What meats have you eaten besides cow, pig and poultry? when i was a kid, i had eaten lamb (or little ba ba ba's as my father loves to say) and rabbit.

What's the last time you ate something that had fallen on the floor? thanksgiving?

What's the last time you ate something you'd picked in the wild? apples from an apple orchard a number of years ago with my family.

Place in order of preference (greatest to least): sushi, italian, thai, french, chinese, indian.

Place in order of preference: whiskey, vodka, light rum, dark rum, gin, tequila, brandy. i don't feel strongly about any of these at all. i like fruity girl drinks involving amaretto and malibu rum.

Place in order of preference: garlic, caramel, lime, basil, mint, ginger.

Place in order of preference: watermelon, banana, strawberry, cherry, apple, orange, pineapple.

Place in order of preference: sex, food, movies, the internet, fashion, sports.

Bread and spread: white bread/butter. seriously.

What's your fast food restaurant of choice, and what do you usually order? honestly, since i moved to chicago it is a rare thing if i eat fast food. maybe wendy's or taco bell. okay, i guess i mean name brand fast food because niko's gyros is fast food, but OH SO DELICIOUS.

Pick a city. What are the three best dining experiences you've had in that city? CHICAGO: think cafe, mas, and oh man, i can't remember the italian place i went a couple of times. WASHINGTON DC area: zola, las tapas, and four seasons diner restaurant!

What's your choice of tipple at the end of a long day? i have no idea what the heck they were asking here.

What's the next thing you'll eat? stonyfield farms banilla yogurt tomorrow with some strawberry preserves stirred in.

Ben's Chili Bowl chili is pretty indisputably a D.C. specialty. I went with my friend Bryan - who, despite living in Washington for six months, hadn't yet been - and we both concluded that it was a goddamn great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I love that place.

my uncle is in his 80s, and ben's chili bowl has been one of his favorite hangouts for decades.

i love bread and butter. this is the best- have you ever had lithuanian bread? see if you can find it. and then put whipped butter on it. and then die of happiness.

how much did you pay for your henckel knife set? i am thinking of buying one but am not sure how much is too much to spend. also, a garlic press. tell me about this so my fingers do not smell like garlic for days at a time?

i didn't get a top of the line henckels set, but mine is alright. i think this is the one i got. they are doing good sales on them at kohl's. i got a gift card from a comforter set i returned and bought the knife set with it.

i love a good garlic press. this is mine. that won't really help the smell though as much as something like a garlic peeler. i know, right? something for everything. i decided not to get one since i love the garlic smell on my fingertips. :)
